The New York Giants will be without their rookie quarterback for the beginning of the post-Brian Daboll era. Jaxson Dart will miss the home game against the Green Bay Packers with a concussion.

Fortunately, it doesn’t sound like he’s going to be out for the long run. While he’s also dealing with an ankle injury, NFL insider Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported that he could be back next week against the Detroit Lions:

“The hope is [Jaxson Dart] is back next week against the Lions. It’s a concussion, not a sprained ankle, so I caution you, but he’s progressed pretty well to this point. The Giants are hopeful they could get him back,” Garafolo said.

Dart has been fairly impressive as a rookie. In fact, he’s posted better numbers than, say, Jayden Daniels in his rookie season, but he hasn’t gotten as many wins.

Of course, plenty of that has had to do with his team’s poor execution, Daboll’s clock management and decision-making, and some tough luck. Even so, he certainly looks like the future of that organization.

For that to happen, however, they will have to do a better job of protecting him from himself. He’s taken way too many hits already, and that’s not going to be sustainable. This was the fourth time Dart had to be evaluated for a concussion, and he’s already been pretty banged up despite not even starting the season as the starter.

The talent is there, and the Giants will be wise to put more talent around him for years to come. But there are only so many beatings any player can take before his body wears down, and the Ole Miss product has to do a better job of avoiding taking so many unnecessary hits.
